How to take a Restorative Approach to grassroots community practice.
The case of Taster Property Inc in Wagga Wagga, N.S.W.
Taster Property Incorporated (Re-Creation thru Recreation) was founded in 2016 by Rachael Mandile with a clear mission: to create communities where children feel loved, supported, and connected—mirroring the positive experiences of her own childhood.
The work Taster does is an early intervention approach to Domestic Violence and Suicide Prevention through connections formed while making and upcycling which nurtures healthy relationships as an alternative to talk-based interventions
Taster was born from the understanding that traditional systems often fail to support many young people adequately. Recognising this gap, Rachael gathered dedicated volunteers and local businesses to initiate Taster's first project. This project allowed young individuals to explore various trades, receive training in their chosen interest and field, and ultimately to secure employment.
Rachael's work emphasises resilience, connection, safety, and empowerment, particularly for vulnerable children and families within schools. Taster aims to foster connections across generations and cultures, building sustainable communities where everyone contributes and benefits.
In 2020, Taster acquired a pre used Nursery Space and opened The Taster Way Op Shop with a large outdoor space attached. This hub supports various group activities and provides a venue for entrepreneurs as young as 5 to develop and market their ideas. Children receive guidance in areas like woodwork, gardening, and art, benefiting from the skills and mentorship of Locals, young and old.
Rachael's guiding principle is, "We haven't made it until everyone has made it," a value that permeates every aspect of Taster's operations.
By investing in individuals, Taster is building a community committed to nurturing generations and reshaping the futures of those who may otherwise face hardship. Hardship can be something as simple as 'Loneliness'.
Through genuine, empathetic, and intentional connections, Taster seeks to restore a sense of community and foster individual and collective growth, ensuring that every contribution is valued and that community sustainability depends on the involvement of all its members. Taster is currently working towards purchasing a property to further support children, young people, single parents, and elders.
This property will serve as a center for learning both traditional and modern skills—farming, land care, and various trades.
The centre will also offer mentoring in entrepreneurial and business skills, alongside counseling and therapeutic services to support the psychosocial development of all Taster community members.
