About the Practitioner

Field of Interest:

Serge aims to assist people to build relationships across differences, to manage uncertainty, and to understand complexity.

He assists people by working to re-establish and improve relationships, and through working collaboratively to facilitate constructive conversations in order to solve problems.

Motivation:

Serge credits two life experiences for having led him to work in Restorative Practice.

The first was as a child, when his parents always included him in conversations and respected his opinions on the subjects being discussed. He remembers dinner parties with many friends of his parents and convivial conversations about challenging topics. These have instilled in him the need to care for those around you and to host collaborative gatherings.

The second came once he had completed his law degree where he found that issues often became worse once lawyers and the court process became involved. Serge found that the development of personal relationships and dialogue, rather than a transactional processes, resulted in better outcomes for all parties concerned.

Over time, he became aware of Mediation and Restorative Practice, and undertook training with both David Moore and Marg Thorsborne to further develop his understanding and skills in RP.

Brings to the Discussion:

Serge has worked for more than 20 years in community mediation, including significant experience with First Nations People and also with people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. He customises the conflict resolution processes he guides to suit the circumstances.

Serge has an undergraduate law degree and practicing certificate from his home country of Germany, a Masters Degree in Dispute Management Law and a Phd in Social Sciences.

He is a trained facilitator and mediator, a casual academic at the University of Queensland and a mediator and trainer at the Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney General.

Additional Information:

Serge works at the intersection of mediation, restorative practice and peace building. He is a conflict coach, facilitator and mediator, trained in facilitative, transformative and narrative mediation, as well as different conferencing processes. He has supported many local and international dialogue and community engagement processes and has deep respect for local knowledge and customary processes of conflict resolution.

Serge is also a director of Peace and Conflict Studies Institute of Australia (PaCSIA) www.pacsia.com.au
