About the Practitioner

Field of Interest:

Felicity is the Student Engagement Teacher at Meridan State College and works with students, staff and parents.

Felicity has previously conducted Restorative Practice Professional Development programs in schools and has developed resources for educators to use to help resolve conflict and wrong doing. These resources are also able to be used where there have been major incidents.

Felicity has developed a number of resources and support practices centred around the implementation of 'circle time' and daily morning meetings, with a focus on social and emotional learning.

Motivation:

As with many in the Queensland education system, Felicity's first exposure to Restorative Practice came from attending a Marg Thorsburn training course.

At the time, Felicity was working as a behaviour advisory teacher, and was searching for ways to more appropriately work with children, some as young as five, who were exhibiting major behavioural issues.

Felicity instinctively knew that the traditional method of suspension was not the answer. Following her introduction by Marg to the principles of Restorative Practice, she devised and developed more proactive and effective long-term strategies to help young people develop positive behaviours and manage conflict and wrongdoing.

Brings to the Discussion:

In 2009 Felicity trained in Restorative Practice with Marg Thorsburn. She applied a teaching lens in order to give students, their teachers, and their parents, the necessary tools to let them effectively engage with the Restorative Practice process.

Felicity's major strengths are in working with children in their early years of education, particularly from Prep to year three. She has developed resources for children who may struggle with the concept of Restorative Practice and has adapted these resources for children who may have a disability or suffered a trauma.
