Of Interest to the Restorative Communities

Seminar series: For our December conversation, on December 4, we will hear from Lurnea High School in Sydney's South West about their Restorative work using Alternatives To Violence as the tool for change. The title for the conversation is: 'The Complementary Nature of Restorative Practices and Alternatives to Violence / Help Increase Peace (AVP / HIP)': More about this.

This year marks a remarkable milestone: 80 years since the end of World War II and the birth of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. To honor this legacy, we invited communities and schools— from Newcastle to Japan—to join us in reflection and creativity. Together, we asked: What are your hopes for the future? Each response was captured on an origami crane or feather, carrying dreams of peace and unity. Inspired by the Japanese tradition of senbazuru— folding 1,000 cranes to grant a wish—we set out to create something extraordinary. The result? 12,000 cranes, folded by countless hands, and three stunning kirigami cranes standing tall as symbols of hope, resilience, and global connection. This collective artwork reminds us that even the smallest gesture can shape a brighter tomorrow.

The Unity Tree: Community groups and schools, from Newcastle to Japan have folded over 10,000 cranes as a powerful symbol of hope, peace and unity. These cranes will be displayed on 6th of December 2025 at the Unity Tree at the Newcastle Library. | Details of when and where.
